Listen to my conversation with Farhan, an IELTS student who scored 8.5 in the listening section of his exam

Recently, I started a little project called IELTSCast.  It is a podcast where I talk to successful IELTS students and ask them to explain how they managed to score so well on the exam.  For those of you with iTunes, you can subscribe by clicking here.  If you do not have iTunes, you can access all of the conversations at

So, in the latest episode, I talk with Farhan about how he managed to score 8.5 in the listening section.  To listen to the entire interview, click here.

If you have achieved an overall band of 7 or higher, please consider talking with me for 20 minutes on Skype about your experience.  Your study advice is both useful and inspirational to other students.  Contact me at

(As always, please provide me with feedback on how I can improve.  Are these interviews helpful?  How could they be better?  Any and all comments to this post greatly appreciated!)

(For those of you waiting for more model essays and videos, they are coming.  I’m having a few small technical issues, but these should be sorted within the next few days.)

Hi Ryan, its a nice initiative you have started, this will a great help for students like me who are preparing to appear for IELTS, but i want to bring your attention about an important thing, you have mentioned Farhan has scored 8.5 in reading, but during the interview i heard him saying he scored 8.5 in listening section. please correct the webpage to listening in place of reading, again keep up the good work, cheers !!!!!

  2. Denis says:

Sound quality from Farham is awful, almost unberable. 🙁

It’s probably recorded on you microphone. I suggest you to record it directly on computer or from parallel line-output from your computer and then mix those streams together. Alternatively, you can at least change your speakers to something more effective.

Sorry if I’ve been too rude, but you asked comments about an improvement.

  3. Ryan says:

@Arpit What a silly mistake. Thanks for pointing that out and for your kind words.

@Denis You are not being rude at all. I appreciate the honest feedback. Yes, the recording quality is not that great on Farhan’s side. I was trying to talk to him via Skype (I was in China and he was in Pakistan). Internet connections in China are very weak. I am not sure how much better they would be where he was in Pakistan. Perhaps in future I should ask my conversation partners to use a microphone if they can. Anyway, it was very nice of Farhan to spare some time and share his experience.

Can anyone else share some feedback? Are these sorts of interviews useful?

  5. Bahga says:

    Dear Ryan,
I wouldn’t say it wasn’t good but I found difficulties to understand Farah accent. Perhaps this is because of weak Internet connection as you said.

  6. Adel says:

    Hello Ryan,
You are doing a good job by sharing candidates’ experience. I would say that Farhan is doing well and I don’t find any problem in listening to your episodes. Actually, I look at the speech deeply not in appearance of it. I look forward for my turn to talk to you (after achieving a high band score).

    Hi Ryan
I think these interviews will be helpful and encouraging for IELTS candidates.
Please continue these sorts of interviews. I think Faran was a little bit hesitant as it was his first ever, very long interview. How much marks you give to Faran for his speaking if you were his IELTS examiner.

    Hi Ryan,

Firstly, Thanks for the podcast. Like others, I find this audio to be difficult to understand. I am not too sure due to the accent, poor internet connection or any other factors.

If possible, can you put the key points of the audio as part of the blog entry?

    Thank you.
